چکیده

The relationship between largeand small-scale motions remains a poorly understood process in wall-bounded turbulence. Investigation performed by Hutchins and Marusic [3] in a high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layer has recently revealed a possible influence of large-scale log region motions on the small-scale near-wall cycle, akin to a pure amplitude modulation. For this study we build upon these observations, using the Hilbert transformation applied to the spectrally filtered small-scale component of fluctuating velocity signals, in order to determine the degree of amplitude modulation effect imparted by the large-scale structures onto the near-wall cycle.

Large-scale amplitude modulation of the small-scale structures in turbulent boundary layers

In this paper we investigate the relationship between the largeand small-scale energy-containing motions in wall turbulence. Recent studies in a high-Reynoldsnumber turbulent boundary layer (Hutchins & Marusic, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. A, vol. 365, 2007a, pp. 647–664) have revealed a possible influence of the largescale boundary-layer motions on the small-scale near-wall cycle, akin to a pure...

Near-wall cycle amplitude modulation in turbulent boundary layers

A non-linear influence of the large-scale log-region motions onto the small-scale near-wall cycle is found to exist in the buffer and log-region of turbulent boundary layers. Based on recent observations of Hutchins & Marusic (2007b) in high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layers, a novel procedure is developed to evaluate the modulation effect. This is done using tools based on Hilbert tran...

Reynolds number dependence of the amplitude modulated near-wall cycle

The interaction in turbulent boundary layers between very large scale motions centered nominally in the log region (termed superstructures) and the small scale motions is investigated across the boundary layer. This analysis is performed using tools based on Hilbert transforms. The results, across a large Reynolds number range, show that in addition to the large-scale log region structures supe...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Small-scale Phase Organization through Large-scale Inputs in a Turbulent Boundary Layer

A synthetic large-scale motion is excited in a flat plate turbulent boundary layer experiment and its influence on small-scale turbulence is studied. The synthetic scale is seen to alter the average natural phase relationships in a quasi-deterministic manner, and exhibit a phase-organizing influence on the directly coupled small-scales. The results and analysis presented here are of interest fr...
